Amarillo Area Mental Health Consumers operates the Agape' Center

a peer support and resource center serving indviduals suffering  from mental illness

Amarillo Area Mental Health Consumers (AMHC) was formed as a chapter of Texas Mental Health Consumers (TMHC) in 1993. The chapter was formed by a handful of independent consumers who were interested in learning more about empowerment and advocacy.

The primary mission of Amarillo Area Mental Health Consumers is to organize, encourage, educate, and train mental health consumers to advocate for themselves and support each other in their recovery. The group's vision is the integration of individuals diagnosed with mental illness into the community as productive, functional, valued citizens.

AMHC provides and operates the Agape' Center, a drop-in support center that focuses on recovery, integrates members back into the community, encourages volunteerism and assists members in obtaining employment.
One-on-one peer counseling, support groups, mental health educational classes, courses on communication and coping skills, crafts, and computer.

The Agape' Center offers people with mental illness support, extensive education about their illnesses, vocational and social skills training, a voice for advocating for their rights, and a safe haven from a world that is often intolerant of people with mental illness.
